During these past 24 years here in Portland, I have been committed to the Arts community in a variety of ways. This includes being the host of a weekly and or biweekly two-hour Jazz radio program, Jazz festival board member, educator, speaker, singer, church service singer and participant, wife, and friend. It’s not uncommon for me to feel as if I’m doing 100 mph with the brakes on. Finding time to focus on myself is a challenge. That said, when I’m able to block out some time, I do not feel the least bit “guilty” about my “pleasure”.
Preparation for time-out begins with gathering up all my favorite things for a spa time at home. While I could and certainly have had appointments at some spa locations, I find it oh so nice to enjoy having this time at home, uninterrupted. First, I light my candle about a half hour ahead of time, so the scent fills the space. My spa music is next, and I have several to choose from, including the sounds of nature in a rain forest. I set it to loop.
Stepping into the shower with my trusty loofa bath brush in hand and aromatic soap foam, I welcome the soft, stimulating abrasiveness. Afterwards, I draw my bath with lavender Calgon water softener paired with lavender foaming milk bath. I slowly immerse myself in this luxurious time-out and let everything else go. It’s not uncommon for me to even snooze a little. Organic fruit juice and water with electrolytes are within my reach. I’ve got all I need. Sometimes, I include a piece of my favorite chocolate. About twenty or thirty minutes in, I apply a facial mask and linger a little while longer.
Shampooing and conditioning my hair in a quick shower rounds things out. Applying nourishing facial and body creams usually brings this time to a close, though depending on my energy level, the pedicure may follow or be done the next day. This, Gal Pals, is my “pleasure” that I don’t feel at all “guilty” about.
